“water is H2O, nothing else”

The quality of tap water is always under discussion. There are so many pro et contra regarding the necessity of filtering (actually cleaning) tap water that probably you could tell more about it:)

The most popular comment against filtering is that water contains minerals we need for our bodies. Water is H2O – two molecules of hydrogen and one molecule of oxygen, nothing else. Water should be just water, isn’t it?

When something is diluted in water, we call it “solution”, not “water” anymore. More so, minerals, usually found in water, such as iron, calcium, or magnesium, come in their inorganic, rigid state and are not properly absorbed by a body. What we cannot absorb, may be stored in our tissues and organs and eventually become toxic to the body. Oppositely, minerals found in fresh vegetables and fruits possess are in the organic, ready-to-to-absorbed state.

Impurities in tap water

Let’s learn from the descriptions of the filters what kind of pollutants we can find in tap water:

  • the mechanical filter removes small fractions of solid impurities bigger than 20 microns from tap water, where they often get in during the transfer;
  • carbon filter removes up to 99% free chlorine, organic impurities, phenol, benzene, some pesticides, also improves taste and smell of water;
  • activated carbon filter removes up to 99% of chlorine, organic impurities, some pesticides, iron compounds, hydrogen sulfide, heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury), phenol, and benzene improves taste and smell of water.

As you can see, business is always related and acts according to market demands. Think about it.

How to improve the quality of tap water, even more, using just simple tools you may find in your kitchen?

How Nature cleans its water

In the mountains, spring water comes from the snow melting process. Water goes round and round, changing its state from liquid to gas or solid. A cloud consists of tons of tiny water droplets and ice crystals, while a snowflake is an aggregate of many ice crystals, and rain is just liquid water.

Water freezing and thawing

Water freezing and further thawing both change the structure of the water body, making its structure well ordered.

From a holistic point of view, water freezing and further thawing provide pure water without any “information” written in it. A French immunologist Jacques Benveniste devoted years to study “water memory.” The LancetNature journal, and other prestigious scientific platforms still talk about Benveniste’s findings, though more than 20 years from his first statements have passed.

Ten years ago, a colleague of mine was consuming only thaw water. Her eyes and skin were bright and shiny; her mood was always joyful, all at the age of 60! I started to experiment with thawing water too. However, as s chemist, I was not satisfied with the quality of water I’ve got. The process of making my thawed water had some disadvantages. One of them – visible white flakes, a kind of concentrated inorganic matter, not beneficial for consumption.

How to make thawing water without white inorganic flakes? It took me three months to start making it absolutely crystal clear, with a good smell and fresh taste. Now, when I drink my thawing water, I feel like being in the mountains. I call it Crystal clear water and use it for drinking, tea, soups, etc.

How to make Crystal clear water

  1. Pour tap water in a thick glass vessel, suitable for freezing, leave 1/4 part of it empty, and freeze. You may filter tap water using a standard Brita filter before freezing;
  2. After 24 hours, check it in a freezer: when all water turns into ice – it is time to take it out of a freezer;
  3. Let ice thaw on a counter, putting a plate under a vessel;
  4. After the ice has melted, filter it through a regular filter like Brita, using an additional coffee paper filter, to keep your filter free from an excess of visible white-flake sediments;
  5. Keep a day-amount of Crystal clear water in a glass vessel on a counter and an additional portion in a refrigerator.

Important notes:

a) Glass vessel suitable for freezing (step 1) is essential in this procedure. When I tried with high-quality silicon molds – I noticed a silicone smell in the water. That means that silicon counterparts interact with water during the process.

I haven’t tried with plastic bottles, even with high-quality plastics, because plastic fillings are ready to solve in water during any environmental changes. No no, we avoid plastic and water contact 99% these days!

b) After ice fully thaws (step 3), I filter it immediately, within an hour. At room temperature, those white-flake precipitates dissolve in water repeatedly if the water stays on a counter for too long.
